Transitioning from VSTS2008 to Visual Studio 2010

One of the questions I have started hearing a bit during my presentations on Visual Studio 2010 is how do my current licenses transition over to VS2010 when it is released?

The great news is that Microsoft has a very generous transition plan whereby pretty much everyone gets something extra! Yeah!

So what does this really mean for you? Well, BEFORE the 22nd March you should definitely consider having your MSDN subscription in place. If you have Visual Studio 2008 Professional, you might even want to consider upgrading or “stepping up” to one of the Team Editions so you’ll get VS 2010 Ultimate when the transition occurs :)

Now have Developer Team Edition with MSDN subscription and renewal rates are about $2000/year. The upgrade to VS 2010 Ultimate sounds nice, but it would appear that the renewal rates for Ultimate will be about $4000/year. Ouch!! Can't handle that.

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for reminding me that I should have mentioned that, while you will have the automatic transition up to a higher level without cost for the rest of the term of your existing subscription, at the end of the subscription term you will need to renew at the higher level or choose to drop down to a lower level.

It might be a good idea to renew a 2008 Team Edition for a full 2 year term at the begining of March 2010. That way you get transitioned up to Ultimate for the full term of the subscription before having to think about the renewal :)

    Cheers
